Overview
Amchi Shala a Marathi Medium School, founded by Shri J K Karmalkar in Tilak Nagar Chembur area has been imparting quality education since 1961.
History  
In the 60’s, Tilak Nagar (Mumbai) situated between Chembur and Ghatkopar was a huge township colony specially constructed for industrial workers, working in and around Chembur. There were no schooling facilities for the workers and their children. The population mainly consisted of financially lower middle class Maharashtrian families.
Shri Janardan Krishna Karmalkar a teacher had an experience of founding schools like Chembur High School decided to shift his attention to this needy area. The Housing Board gave him part of building no 26 in Tilak Nagar to start his endeavor. He founded a trust Gareeb Vidyarthi Sahayyak Mandal (GVS Mandal) in 1958. The main aim of the trust is embedded in the name itself A trust to help poor and needy class of society. He started a school under the auspices of the trust on 19 June 1961, which was called as Amchi Shala. ( 19°04'10?N 72°53'59?E? / ?19.069358°N 72.899737°E? / 19.069358; 72.899737[1]} shows exact location of Amchi Shala in Chembur area.
All throughout the formation of the trust and the school he was ably supported by his wife Smt Indira Karmalkaralso a teacher and later became Principal of Amchi Shala. In the beginning there were 310 students with 7 divisions and 11 teaching staff.

For Admission the parents are requested to directly approach the school administrative ofice between 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM on working days.

"Each year about 85% of students clear the year and get promoted to next division. Average passing percentage of SSC students has been around 75%. March 2007 saw a phenomenal 97% passing their SSC exam.
Along with the regular exams the students are encouraged for appearing in scholarship exams for 4th and 7th std, National Talent Search (NTS) exam for 8th and 10th std, Homi Bhabha Bal Vaidnyanik Spradha Pariksha for 6th std and 9th std, Tilak Maharashtra Vidhyapeeth Pariksha for 6th and 7th std, Drawing Grade Examination for 9th and 9th std."
